Engen, in collaboration with Proconics, has enhanced the learning environment at Merebank Secondary School in South Durban.
Identified as a school in need of support by the Community-Engen Joint Committee, Engen and Proconics joined forces to provide essential funding to help boost the educational experience for learners.
Fueled by a shared commitment to education and community development, the collaboration secured R40k towards Robotics and Coding equipment.
The funds were used to purchase equipment to enhance various aspects of STEM education, including: 60 AAA batteries, 15 Classroom Smart Home Kits, 15 Smart Home Material Packs, 15 Ring Bit Car v2 Kits, 15 Micro bit Starter Kits, and 10 crocodile clips.
The contribution also aims to create a conducive learning environment empowering learners to excel academically and thrive in their educational journey.
Vimla Chetty, Acting Deputy Principal at Merebank Secondary School, expressed sincere appreciation to Engen and Proconics, highlighting the digital impact the funding will have on the school’s Robotics and Coding programme for Grade 8 and 9 learners.
“It’s essential to teach our learners the coding skills necessary to function in a digital and information-driven world,” says Chetty. She added that the school aims to extend the programme to other grades by 2025.
Olwethu Mdabula, Engen’s CSI Manager, emphasised the critical role of education in shaping the future of the country. “Engen is dedicated to making a positive difference in the lives of our youth through access to quality education. This project aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which focuses on ensuring the right to quality education for all learners,” added Mdabula.
By providing essential funding for coding and robotic kits, we motivate students to focus on their studies and prepare them for future careers in STEM.
Proconics, a South African engineering company, is currently engaged in control and instrumentation work for the Engen Refinery-to-Terminal (RTT) project, demonstrating their dedication to supporting local communities beyond their primary operations.
