GirlCode‘s inaugural Pan-African hackathon was a resounding success, bringing together over 1000 young women from across the continent to tackle pressing challenges aligned with the UN SDGs. We thank Absa Bank Kenya, Absa Bank Botswana, Workshop17, ikhokha, and MTN Headquarters for their generous support in hosting the hackathon at their respective offices.

From this pool of exceptional talent, the ultimate winners impressed with their innovative solution to SDG 4 Quality Education: A transformative learning platform designed to equip disadvantaged learners with the tools and knowledge they need to succeed, all in their mother tongue. As a reward for their ingenuity, they will be jetting off to an international tech conference sponsored by Chenosis. This incredible opportunity will expose them to global trends and inspire them to create ground breaking, women-led tech enterprises in Africa.

Local winners also celebrated with laptops, headphones, and TakeALot, Superbalist and Mr D vouchers sponsored by TakeALot Group.

“This Pan-African hackathon marks a monumental milestone for GirlCode as we celebrate our 10th anniversary. Witnessing over a thousand young women come together to innovate and solve real-world problems is a testament to the power of collaboration and the bright future of women in tech on the African continent,” said Zandile Mkwanazi, CEO of GirlCode.

Witnessing over a thousand young women come together to innovate and solve real-world problems is a testament to the power of collaboration and the bright future of women in tech on the African continent,” said Zandile Mkwanazi, CEO of GirlCode.

This event underscored the critical importance of nurturing young women in tech and creating a pipeline of female leaders. We are immensely grateful to our Gold Sponsors: Chenosis, Vumatel, NinetyOne, BET Software, iKhokha, VML, and Boxfusion for their unwavering support.

“Although we have been active for 10 years in South Africa, this pan-African hackathon marks a new beginning of our journey. GirlCode is committed to expanding our reach across Africa, inspiring more girls to pursue careers in tech, and fostering a new generation of women leaders.” Concludes Zandile Mkwanazi.
